Management of dementia can be drug and non-drug approach.

Specific treatment consists of cholinesterase inhibitors, including Donepezil、Rivastigmine and Galantamine which are effective for patients with Alzheimer’s disease in the early and moderate stages. Cholinesterase inhibitors are also indicated in Cerebral Lewy Body disease characterized by prominent visual hallucinations. Vascular dementia and dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease may also respond to CHEI.

In the moderate stage when the effect of the above drugs have plateaued, Ebixa can be added. The combination serves to stabilize disease for several years. All drug treatment must be prescribed by doctors. Please consult your family physician when necessary.

It should noted that non-drug management such as cognitive activities, reality orientation, validation, multisensory stimulation and other psychosocial activities are equally important in the total management of the patient.

The family members have to be supported in the care of the patient, and an integrated inhome and daycare programme can relieve burden for the family. The caregiver will also benefit from regular respite arrangements.
